I'm of the opinion that tolerating even radical religious intolerance through the simple argument that most religious people are "not like that" and actually don't follow their religious laws by the word, is not good enough a safety net for a decently free society.

it's ok for atheists to step up for the fact that although we don't have a perfect recipe for happiness, at least we do know, that a certain amount of education, personal freedoms, the absence of the concept of sins, blasphemy and constant guilt, the absence of homophobia, xenophobia, the hate of women and sexuality, will actually make you happier and will allow to live a more carefree life than through indoctrination and oppression by those who would prefer you not to educate yourself, those who ask you to believe instead of questioning. we can't know this much about how societies work, and still not point out where religion and all sorts of superstitious belief systems and doctrines are trying to fight reason and keep people ignorant.
